Sometimes life gets so overwhelming that we think we need to figure everything out.

The money.

The relationship.

The job.

The illness.

The family.

The future.

The thing that isn't working.

The thing we desperately want to change.

We look at everything at once and wonder:

“How am I ever going to get from here to there?”

Maybe that's the wrong question.

Maybe you don't have to know how you're going to get all the way there.

Maybe you only have to see the next step.

When Everything Feels Like Too Much

Most people have encountered some version of this pattern in their lives. It shows up in business, education, government, social media, and countless organizations that begin with good intentions.

The problem starts when the measurement becomes more important than the mission.

Metrics can be useful. Goals matter. Accountability matters.

There is a message woven into modern society that most people hear every day, whether they recognize it or not.

Produce more.

Earn more.

Compete more.

Be more.

And if the results aren't there, then somehow you are not enough.

I recently found myself sitting in a room where success was being discussed. Metrics were being discussed. Activity was being discussed. The formula for success was being discussed.

As I listened, lyrics from one of my own songs unexpectedly surfaced in my mind:

I wrote those words more than a decade ago in my song “Until the Bliss”. Back then, I didn’t fully understand why they mattered so much to me. I just knew I felt something real inside them.

Over time, life has a way of testing your definitions.

The world constantly tells people who they should be.

How they should work.

What success should look like.

What’s acceptable to say.

What dreams are practical.

There was a time when relationships mattered more than branding.

People built businesses through trust.
Communities grew through loyalty.
Experience mattered.
Character mattered.
Service mattered.

Now many people walk into workplaces where human value can feel tied to performance optics, compliance, and image management.

In the modern workforce, there are often invisible carrots and sticks:
approval, exclusion, promotion, subtle ridicule, incentives, social pressure, and fear of becoming irrelevant.

People learn…

I didn’t understand the second award.

In high school, I understood the music award.

That one made sense.

I was in choir. I sang solos. I had roles in school productions, including Godspell in 11th grade. So when my name was called for female vocal music, I wasn’t surprised. I was honored—but it aligned with what I knew I was doing.

But then they called another award.

Social studies.

I didn’t expect it. I didn’t understand it. I remember standing there thinking, why me?
